DIY Faux Taxidermy Wall Art {Made from things around the house!}

For me, after the winter holidays are over, when the Christmas tree comes down, the house feels completely empty.

I suddenly get an urge, somewhere deep in my creative spirit, to change everything that I can get my hands on.

Nothing gets spared.

 

Take this Christmas ornament for example from my Instagram Account.

 

My girlfriend thoughtfully gifted this golden deer to me way back in December and we both knew she would look adorable on my gold and neutral Christmas tree.

Once the tree came down though, I couldn’t pack this pretty glittery deer away with the stockings and garland. I thought that the little deer was so adorable that she needed to be incorporated into our day to day decor.

So, one afternoon, my wheels got to spinning.

(Insert squeaky wheel sounds here, if you are my comical husband or brother.)

I
figured I would mount my sweet little deer to a block of some kind but I
didn’t want to spend $8 at my local craft store for a piece of
decorative wood. 

Hmmmmm….

I did what any fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants-diy-er
would do, and I rummaged through my cutting board collection and found a
beat up board I had once purchased at the thrift store for a buck.

It was a buck and I had a lonely Buck. 

Match made in weird irony heaven.

I took a quiet reflective moment to remember all of the times that the cutting board had saved our counters and had allowed us to chop onion and garlic on its surface; I then told it that it would enjoy its new life much better.

No more knifes, no more hiding in drawers, NOPE, this one was getting a new life: front and center!

Then, with a slight sanding of any loose wooden bits, and after I used an exacto knife to cut off the attachment on the top of my deers head, I painted both pieces with some left over grey-blue paint. 

Yeah! Grey-blue and matchy-matchy!

My pretty glittery deer went from being the star of the show, to working perfectly in conjunction with my hard working vintage cutting board.

 

 

I feel that with the new paint and the new construction of this piece that the deer no longer looks feminine. Since, I really like to give names to inanimate objects, this baby will be the next victim. 

Yep, its decided, this sweet thang will most definitely need a manly-ish name to match its manly-ish makeover.

Personally, I like Hershal, Roscoe and Buck.
