Not your Grammas plate wall

So my latest and greatest obsession has been scouring the Internet for images of plate walls. now before you get all down on me, exclaiming that plate walls are just what Grandma use to have, take a second and look at the combination of pictures above.
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I LOVE a good plate wall.
I don’t think my obsession has been recent, in fact, I think I have been programed to like plate walls.
Plate walls run in my family. My mother has a problem with filling up every square inch of every wall in her house, it isn’t actually a problem, though her six kids now and again mock her, that she has no spare place to hang anything!! She has a few beautiful plate walls displayed in the home I grew up in.
Each wall has something precisely placed on it to create a story. And I am a girl that loves a good story too!
So lately, I have been obsessively collecting white plates to make a plate wall in our living room that will create a story for our own family.
A plate wall, for me is actually a solution to a problem we have in decorating our own home!
You see, after purchasing art over the years, I have realized that I quickly grow tired of still life’s and though I love them in the moment, they end up being passed on to someone else and their home after I grow tired of them in a year or so.
Funny thing is, my hubby’s name is Art and I haven’t grown tired of him quite yet. πŸ˜‰
For some reason, a textured wall like a gallery wall or similar groupings are what I am drawn to most, and since my in disposable hubby named Art, allows me to now make most of the house decisions, a plate wall is what our dining room is soon going to get!
There is just something I love deeply about a monochromatic wall full of old and new plates!
The unpredictability of the shapes, sizes and textures keep your eyes moving, and I am one who’s eyes are always moving. The individual color scheme on the contrast, is so calming! It is like a wall of polka dots! And polka dots are also one of those things I just lurrrve!
My favorite plate wall of all time must be the one made by  Liz Marie at Liz Marie Blog. She has put together a great mix of shapes on her grayish tone wall. The white seems to pop and I love that they are perfectly centres within the wall.
I saved this picture on my phone and peek at it while I am popping tags at the Thrift Store and looking for good deals on my own pile of white plates.
This is another plate wall I adore, similar wall color as the above photo too. It is from Cottage and Vine
I love that the largest plate is front and center and then the monochromatic grouping is built around it.
The symmetry is beautiful as well.
This plate wall from View Along the Way just amazes me! At first glance I am intrigued and drawn right in. I want to sit in that kitchen with a cup of tea and just look at each and every plate for hours. The diversity of each plate is so stimulating, and the way they playfully hug the wall is so unexpected and charming!
Another all time favourite of mine is this plate wall from The Nester. I love the colour schemes the Nester uses and the ones in this room are a great example of her eclectic yet traditional taste. I love the soft muted greens and the tan with the abstract plate wall in between the symmetrical lamps.
Most of all, I like that tradition was broken when the plates were hung above a sofa and added into part of the sitting room design. Plates aren’t only for your dining room anymore! Perfection!
This plate wall of greens and whites is beautiful! You can find it at Eclectically Vintage. I especially love that the black plate was thrown in there too, just to keep your eye moving around the display of beauties and to give the wall an element of surprise.
This is the newest plate wall I have seen, has been from The Lettered Cottage and I love how it dances up the wall of a piano room just like notes seem to dance across music pages. So playful and pretty. The mix of the couples initials ans their rustic element compared to the shiny plates is unexpected and perfect to personalize a special room.
I love how this plate wall by Marion at Miss Mustard Seed is hugged by two windows with full panels. I want to hang our plate wall between our back door and our living room window, both of which have long striped panels framing them. The difference in the soft billowy fabric and the hard shiny plates I find to be so eye catching!
Denise from Denise in Bloom shows you how she hung this beautiful plate wall and some time saving tips on how to do so at your home! I love her colour selection for her plates! I wish I could find all these pretty colours! They are so fresh and remind me of the beach and the garden.
So, all of these beautiful photos have inspired me to continue on with the process of collecting plates for my very own plate wall. I am pretty sure I have enough plates right now….but you can never have too many white dishes anyways, right?? πŸ˜‰
This is a quick picture of our living room.
The small wall where the over sized measuring stick rests, will be where I want to put our own plate wall. One can see this wall fro any spot in our living room.
It isn’t a big area but I think some tone on tone texture for that little wall would make a big impact.
This wall is equally visible when you are sitting at our dining room table.
You can even spot this wall from the kitchen.
And you can still spot this wall first thing, as you climb the stairs and into the main living area of our home!
That is, if you can look past the little cuties that are usually playing, wrestling, jumping and swinging from the chandelier . πŸ˜‰
What do you think about my plate wall obsession? Would plates be something you would display in your home?? Would you have to have yours symmetrical, or do you prefer the more organic looking displays??
Eeeek! So much to think about!!!
Cant wait to show you what we come up with!!

I love the idea of a contemporary plate wall too so thanks for all the inspiration! I've been thinking of doing one above our couch because we have a large wall behind it that would be filled nicely with a big collection. I get nervous because we live in earthquake country and I figure as soon as I put in the time hanging 20 plates on the wall, we'd have a big one πŸ™‚ I guess the key is inexpensive plates and hanging them extra securely!
