Our House – Kitchen wall!

If you have been following along on our house remodel you would know that when we bought the house a year and a half ago, the kitchen looked like this…

Truthfully, there was nothing “wrong” with it. The space just wasn’t functional for our young families needs. This half wall was something that didn’t make sense to us when looking at the homes layout.

I am like you, and can appreciate a large dance floor in the middle of a kitchen. BUT, I would rather have more cupboards to stash away the treats.

We also desperately needed a wall to back our television on to from the conjoining living room. There was absolutely no way to arrange the living room and combine a television at the same time with the room full of windows and a large half wall.

Our larger fridge also needed a new home.

It was quickly determined that we needed to build the half wall up! Happy day! (And we needed to ditch the “junk/tool corner” in the process.

This is what our living room looked like for a good couple weeks. We came home after working ten hours and paint the walls in our living room, or relocated pipes and built up a wall.

We ripped off the moulding on the tops of the wall.

This is where we needed to put our television since there were no other walls that made sense with our furniture.

This is the wall before we tore it down and relocated the outtake-intake air vent. The vent left a big gaping hole in our newly tiled floor though.

(Did I mention this whole idea was after our initial kitchen design? We were living in our kitchen for a month and I realized this new kitchen still was not working for us. All of the cabinets were against the walls and it ended up being a tour around the kitchen every time you tried to cook a meal! We cook a lot here, so I knew it would make more sense to have an island in our kitchen and to remove the cabinets that were suppose to go on the half wall. This decision changed our lives and the functionality of the space completely.)

We put something over the big gaping hole in our floor to keep little-children-feet from falling into its depths.

It may or may not have stayed like this for another few weeks….

We built up the walls on both sides of the half wall.

Art got to work relocating the vents and building up walls….

Just in time for me to talk my loving husband into a kitchen island!! One day when I was suppose to be cleaning the house and doing errands, and not spending money I found some of our on-sale-discontinued-cabinetry-doors at our local Re-Store!! It pays to shop even when your husband discourages it. πŸ˜‰

They were FIVE DOLLARS a door and TEN DOLLARS for the actual cabinet boxes!

I told you this kitchen remodel was the biggest deal of the year!

Shhhh, here is a sneak peek of the kitchen that was half installed when we decided to remodel our remodel.

It was so exciting and stressful and risky to shop around to piece together our kitchen remodel! But the leg work paid off when we ended up saving so much!

We cant be the only ones who do such crazy things just to save some cash?!! Can we? πŸ˜‰

I cant wait to show you how we put together our last minute island that ended up being the best kitchen decision yet.

Stay tuned, we are living in an (almost) finished kitchen that I really want to share with you!

More money in my pocket rather than someone else's. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I'm looking forward to seeing how your kitchen turns out. I'm sure it will be fabulous!
